Tarlac to install Cory marker

ARLAC - The local government of Tarlac city is planning to install a marker or possibly a statue of former President Cory Aquino as a fitting tribute to the former leader.

Tarlac City Mayor Genaro Mendoza said Saturday they want a symbol to remind them of how a plain housewife from Tarlac city rose to
become president of the country.

Mendoza also said they are planning to mobilize Tarlac city residents who want to pay their last respects to the former president since the wake will only be held in Metro Manila.

Mendoza said they would have appreciated it if the remains will be brought to Tarlac but they understand and respect the decision of the Aquino family to hold the wake in Metro Manila.

Staff at the Aquino Museum inside the Hacienda Luisita mourned the death of the former president. They scattered small yellow ribbons on the ground and partially draped their building with yellow curtains.

Rosita Alfaro, one of the employees at the museum, remembers the former president as a motherly boss. She said that whenever the president visited them, she always had "pasalubong" for them.

She said she is also lucky to have kept old clothes given to them by the former president.

Maria Cristina Angeles, secretary of the Piso't Puso Foundation, established by the former president after her term, also has fond memories of the president.

As one of the original members of the foundation, she said she will never forget the wisdom taught them by the former president - the
importance of saving up their one peso coins for livelihood projects for the poor in Tarlac province.

Aside from fond memories of the president, she also treasures the gifts given by the former president on special occasions, as well as pictures she had with President Aquino.

Mrs. Aquino died at 3:18 a.m. on Saturday due to complications from colorectal cancer.
