Filipino 'chatters' pay tribute to Cory
MANILA - Filipinos around the world expressed their sadness over the death of former President Corazon Aquino. Some of them paid tribute not only through social networks like Facebook and Twitter but also through live chat.
Scores of Filipino have joined abs-cbnNEWS.com’s live chat since it opened shortly after Mrs. Aquino’s death early Saturday morning.
Most of them offered their condolences to the Aquino Family over the loss of Mrs. Aquino, who became the country’s chief executive following the ouster of former strongman Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.
“Farewell our Beloved President. May you rest in Peace. We will miss you and you are always a part of our lives. Thank you for the changes you made and it made the country proud. We love you and God Bless your family and I include them in my prayers for their full acceptance and recovery,” said Merlyn Raloso of Davao.
One chatter even described Mrs. Aquino as the one who brought back democracy to the country. She said that her death has eased the former leader’s suffering from cancer.
“Labis kaming nagulat sa kanyang pagpanaw. Magkahalong lungkot at saya ang aming nadama. Malungkot dahil nawala INA ng DEMOKRASYA ng ating bansang Pilipinas. Masaya dahil natapos na ang kanyang paghihirap sa kanyang pakikilaban sa kanyang sakit at siya na ngayon ay siguradong nasa pag-iingat ng Panginoong Diyos. Taos puso nakikiramay ang aming buong sambahayan sa pamilyang naulila. Patnubayan nawa kayo ng puong maykapal,” said Angelina S. Candel.
Another chatter thanked Mrs. Aquino for inspiring her to go through life’s trails.
“I was once a widow and you were there as our Guest of Honor. You delivered a speech and as a single Mom then to three children all in college all by myself, I was inspired to go on and face the challenges. In every successful hurdle there was joy, as long as the children are all in your side in every step of the way. We will surely miss you!” said Corazon Yap.
Mrs. Aquino passed away after battling colon cancer for more than a year. She was 76.
Once a reluctant housewife, Aquino was known as an icon of Philippine democracy after the EDSA 'People Power' revolution removed the Marcos dictatorship and restored democracy in the Southeast Asian archipelago in 1986.
Aquino served as the nation's president until 1992 when she gave way to her successor, President Fidel Ramos. Even in retirement, she remained in the public eye and continued to speak out on political issues.
