Arroyo cuts short US trip for nat'l mourning

MANILA - President Arroyo has cut short her US trip and will fly back to Manila to join the nation in mourning the death of former President Corazon Aquino.

Mrs. Arroyo has confirmed that she will skip her trip to Chigaco and Guam.

She will leave New York for Manila on Saturday (Sunday in RP).

Mrs. Arroyo has already issued Administrative Order No. 269 to coordinate “official acts and observances” in coordination with the funeral arrangements of Mrs. Aquino.

She created a committee headed by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita with Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, plus representatives designated by the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court, and the Aquino family.

The committee is empowered to carry out funeral arrangements for the former President "commensurate with the people's love and respect for her."

The president flew to the US to meet American President Barack Obama at the White House and discuss issues concerning Philippine-US partnership.

Mrs. Aquino passed away Saturday morning after battling colon cancer for more than a year. She was 76.
