Mayon Volcano shows increased activity - Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that there has again been an increase in the activity of Mayon Volcano.

Latest data of the agency said 6 volcanic quakes were recently recorded and the increased magnitude of the quakes is a cause for alarm.

750 metric tons of sulfur dioxide emissions were estimated from the volcano which was higher than the recent 200 metric tons.

A visual inspection of the volcano’s crater could not be conducted however due to the continuous rains.

Phivolcs said that it was waiting for weather conditions to improve so that an aerial survey can be launched.

In spite of the recent data however, Phivolcs said that it still sees no indication to increase the alert level hoisted on the volcano.

The agency reiterated that Alert Level 2, raised since July, remains over the volcano.

It also reminded the public to remain prepared for lahar flows especially after days of continuois rain.
